Method and sourceBar to PSI Conversion Formula
To convert bar to PSI, multiply the bar value by 14.503768. One bar is defined as exactly 100,000 pascals, and one PSI equals 6,894.76 pascals.
Bar and PSI Explained
Bar (bar)
The bar is a metric pressure unit defined as exactly 100,000 pascals — deliberately close to the 101,325-pascal standard atmosphere at sea level. That near-atmosphere size makes it practical for everyday ratings: passenger tyres hold about 2.3 bar, an espresso pump delivers 9 bar, and a full dive cylinder stores 200 bar. Because its pascal definition is a round power of ten, the bar converts cleanly inside the metric system.
Where it is used: Bar is the everyday pressure unit across Europe, the UK, and much of Asia, and it shows up in Australia on European import tyre placards, dive cylinders, and imported machinery nameplates; the diving industry worldwide rates cylinders in bar.
Origin: British meteorologist William Napier Shaw introduced the bar in 1909, naming it after the Greek baros, meaning weight, as a convenient near-atmosphere unit.
PSI (psi)
PSI (pound-force per square inch) is an imperial pressure unit: one pound of force applied over one square inch of area. In SI terms it equals 6,894.76 pascals. As a finely scaled unit, PSI numbers run large — a 2.3 bar European tyre rating becomes 33.4 PSI, and a 200 bar dive cylinder becomes 2,900.8 PSI. Gauge readings marked PSIG measure pressure above the surrounding atmosphere, while PSIA readings include it.
Where it is used: PSI is everywhere in Australian workshops despite kPa being the official unit: servo tyre gauges, compressor regulators, and plenty of owner's manuals quote it, as do paintball and pressure-washer ratings.
Origin: The unit grew out of 19th-century British engineering practice, pairing the imperial pound-force with the square inch, and it remains standard in US customary use today.

When You Need Bar to PSI Conversions
Imported Car Tyre Placards
Your European-market hatchback lists 2.4 bar on the door pillar, but the servo air pump reads PSI — enter 2.4 and inflate to 34.8 PSI before the trip up the Hume.
Scuba Fills at the Reef
A liveaboard fill station on the Great Barrier Reef charges cylinders by bar while your console gauge dial is in PSI, so a 207 bar fill becomes 3,002.3 PSI before you splash.
Hydraulic Unit Nameplates
A German hydraulic power unit rated 250 bar must be verified against a local analogue gauge — 250 bar is 3,625.9 PSI on the dial.
Espresso Machine Service
Bench-testing an Italian espresso machine in a Melbourne café, you hold the pump at 9 bar and need to log 130.5 PSI on the PSI test gauge at the portafilter.

How to Use
-
1
Enter Bar Value
Type the bar reading from your gauge or spec sheet — common entries include European import tyre pressures (2.0-2.5 bar), espresso pumps (9 bar), or dive cylinders (200-232 bar)
-
2
View PSI Result
The equivalent PSI value appears instantly. For example, 2.3 bar converts to about 33.4 PSI

Compare With Australian Tyre Norms
Check your reading against local placards. Most passenger cars in Australia run 32-36 PSI (roughly 220-250 kPa), so a 2.3 bar tyre is right in range at 33.4 PSI. For beach driving, many 4WDers drop to around 16-20 PSI (1.1-1.4 bar)

About Bar to PSI Converter
Our free online bar to PSI converter provides instant, accurate pressure conversions. Whether you are decoding a European import's tyre placard with a PSI-only gauge, getting tanks filled before a Great Barrier Reef trip, dialling in an espresso machine, or checking a hydraulic power pack on the worksite, this tool gives you precise results. Bar is the everyday metric pressure unit across Europe and most of the world, while Australia officially uses kilopascals (kPa) — with PSI still dominating on servo gauges and compressors. Our converter uses the exact conversion factor where 1 bar equals 14.503768 PSI (100 kPa).
Expert Tips for Bar to PSI Conversion
For quick tyre estimates: 2.0 bar ≈ 29.0 PSI, 2.2 bar ≈ 31.9 PSI, 2.3 bar ≈ 33.4 PSI, 2.5 bar ≈ 36.3 PSI. Memorise these four and you will cover most European import placards
Espresso machines brew at 9 bar — that is 130.5 PSI of pump pressure. If your portafilter gauge reads in PSI, look for roughly 130 during extraction — essential knowledge in coffee-mad Melbourne
Dive cylinders come in 200 bar (2,900.8 PSI), 232 bar (3,364.9 PSI), and 300 bar (4,351.1 PSI) ratings. Match your regulator and the fill station to the cylinder stamp before heading out to the reef
Hydronic heating systems, common in older Melbourne and Adelaide homes, typically show 1.0-1.5 bar on the gauge — only 14.5-21.8 PSI. A drop below 0.7 bar (10.2 PSI) usually means the loop needs repressurising
For mental maths, multiply bar by 14.5 instead of 14.503768. The error is under 0.03 per cent, fine for gauges but use the exact factor for documentation
